2026-08-24MABUX: Global bunker market may turn into phase of irregular changes on Aug. 24 amid persistent Middle East tensions.
The MABUX World Bunker Index — a composite benchmark reflecting daily prices for 380 HSFO, VLSFO, and MGO – showed irregular changes on Aug. 21, amid persistent geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz:
380 HSFO: USD/MT: 637.57 (+6.54)
VLSFO: USD/MT: 787.71 (+4.45)
MGO: USD/MT: 1 373.15 (-6.66)
As of Aug. 21, the MABUX Market Differential Index (MDI), which tracks the spread between Market Bunker Prices (MBP) and the MABUX Digital Bunker Benchmark (DBP), showed the following trends across the four major global bunkering hubs—Rotterdam, Singapore, Fujairah, and Houston:
• HSFO segment: Singapore moved back into the undercharge zone, joining Rotterdam and Houston. Discount margins widened by $12 in Rotterdam, $8 in Singapore and $1 in Houston. Fujairah remained the only overcharged port, with its premium narrowing by $5. Singapore’s MDI stayed close to the 100% correlation mark between MBP and DBP, while Houston’s discount remained above the $100 threshold.
• VLSFO segment: Singapore also shifted back into the undercharge zone, alongside Rotterdam and Houston. Discount margins increased by $14 in Rotterdam, $16 in Singapore and $5 in Houston. Fujairah was the only overcharged port, although its premium declined by $18. Singapore’s MDI remained close to the 100% correlation level between MBP and DBP.
• MGO LS segment: All four ports remained undercharged. Discount margins widened by $5 in Rotterdam, $14 in Singapore, $3 in Fujairah and $7 in Houston. MDI discounts in Rotterdam, Singapore and Houston continued to stand well above the $100 mark.
MABUX expects bunker price dynamics to become less consistent, while ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to provide underlying support to fuel prices: 380 HSFO: plus-minus 2-5 USD/MT, VLSFO: plus 3-8 USD/MT, MGO LS: plus 3–10 USD/MT.
